The company stated that ‘temporary and non-serious’ were all observed events which had come to its attention. In subsequent analysis, the culprit was identified as the trace of a breakdown product from a chemical used for the treatment of wooden storage pallets – 2,4,6-tribromoanisole. The wording of the company, however, was somewhat ambiguous – the responsible substance is ‘believed’ to have been a breakdown product, a choice of words that could be taken to imply that when they issued the statement, McNeil was not entirely certain that this was really the case.
